Illustration Friday: Blue

Poor Bob's Blues
24" x 48"
ink, acrylic, found chains on found wood

This IF topic couldn't make me more happy!! Seein' how've I been in a pthalo blue rut for some time now. This is Robert Pete Williams. In the 50's Mr. Williams was convicted of murder and sentenced to life inprisonment in Angola State Penn, until the man responsible for Arhoolie records came and recorded his blues. The scholar then played Mr. Williams' blues for Warden and the Warden had Robert play before a judge. The judged granted Robert pete Williams parole with three years probation, just in time for the huge blues/folk revival in the 60's. At the end of his life, Robert died a free man on his own land, after traversing the globe several times playin' the music he loved. Fat Possum released a pretty fine album of his songs, worth checkin' out. His music is definitley avant blues, if ever there was such a thing.

Jeffrey Lee pierce was the intense frontman for L.A.'s roots punk outfit the GunClub. The group set out to destroy blues music and disgust the general publlic with their covers of great blues standards. As time went on they themselves became wrapped and swaddled in the blues. Jeffrey's swansong was a solo album, a blues solo album, fantastic piece of work. Checkout Ramblin' Jeffrey Lee with Cyprus Grove and Willie Love, its damn good.
